Barry Shiffman appointed Executive Artistic Director of Vancouver’s Music in the Morning

Music in the Morning is pleased to announce the appointment of Barry Shiffman as Executive Artistic Director effective June 1, 2009. This appointment follows a long association between Shiffman and the Music in the Morning Concert Society. As a member of The St. Lawrence String Quartet from 1989 to 2006, he began appearing in concert for Music in the Morning in 1992, and has returned every year since in a diverse array of projects.

A sought-after teacher and performer, Shiffman maintains an active international concert career as a violinist and violist, and will continue to serve as Director of Music Programs and Executive Director of the Banff International String Quartet Competition at The Banff Centre in Alberta. He will bring an extraordinary wealth of experience and strong artistic vision to Music in the Morning. Commenting on his appointment, he said, “June Goldsmith and Music in the Morning have always been a beacon of light in the classical music world. With a dedicated following of music lovers and a stunning history of success in presenting, educating, and commissioning, the opportunity to lead this organization forward is a great privilege. I look forward to working with Music in the Morning and their many partners in Vancouver to continue providing opportunities to experience live music at its very best.”

Music in the Morning was founded by June Goldsmith in 1985 and has grown to become one of the country’s largest presenters of classical music. In March 2009, Goldsmith announced her plans to retire from the leadership of Music in the Morning. She, along with Music in the Morning’s Board of Directors, selected Shiffman to carry the organization forward.

Recognized for her exceptional work in founding and directing Music in the Morning for over 25 years, Goldsmith has received The Order of Canada and The Order of British Columbia. Goldsmith will continue to serve as Founding Director, providing consultation, contributing to programming, and helping to expand on the success that Music in the Morning has enjoyed.

“I can’t think of any better person to take over the role that I have enjoyed for 25 years. I am excited about passing the torch to Barry, as he understands the roots of our special organization. I know he will bring new ideas, new vision and lots of enthusiasm to this position, and I look forward to seeing Music in the Morning continue to thrive,” says Goldsmith.

Music in the Morning’s 2009/2010 concert season begins September 1 at the Vancouver Academy of Music with Pennsylvania’s Time for Three string trio, and continues with six additional concert series presentations; the fascinating Composers and Coffee series; the casual, after-work Rush Hour concert series, and Family Musik, composer Rob Kapilow’s popular education series.
